Unlike the antagonistic witches we saw in mainstream media throughout our childhood,  modern witches aren’t required to have supernatural powers like the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus (1993), nor do they need to terrorize children like the ones in Roald Dahl’s dark fantasy novel The Witches. Practitioners of modern witchcraft also no longer fear being hunted down like the women from the Salem witch trials. If you practice self-care, own lots of plants, enjoy spending time with your pet familiar, or are proud to be feminist – you may be a modern witch of some sort by today’s definitions.

1. Morning cleanse

It’s a misconception that witches are only active at night; morning rituals are just as important to them. According to author and columnist Gabriela Herstik who identifies as a neo-Pagan witch, the first thing she does after waking up is to greet her deities. Afterwards, she begins her morning routine that includes washing her face, brushing teeth and applying daytime moisturizer.


A common practice among modern witches is to commence the day with a wellness and exercise activity. Listen to your body to gauge what it needs for the day. To get your blood and energy flowing, start with a 20-minute yoga session. Follow up with 10 to 15 minutes of meditation, breathwork or sound therapy. Many modern witches use technology to augment their ancient practices. For example, you can conveniently search music apps on your mobile phone for playlists to guide your meditation. Having crystals and plants around can also put you in a relaxing mood. If possible, take your yoga mat outside to surround yourself with nature during your wellness activity.


Start by clearing your mind of negative thoughts that have been plaguing you lately. You can purge them out on paper – this process can be very cathartic and enlightening. After releasing all that negativity, you’re ready to set your intention for the day or week, depending on what works best for you. You can incorporate tarot cards while you’re at it for guidance or inspiration. Another idea is to journal your thoughts and progress – a journal and a fancy pen are absolutely essential for this!


For a revitalizing boost, make a juice or smoothie mixed with nourishing ingredients (Gabriela Herstik’s favorite recipe consists of greens, fruits and nut-based products). Add a magical touch while you’re at it by serving the beverage in a cute drinking glass!

For those who prefer warm drinks, a herbal brew can add the perfect calming touch to your morning. Any green witch or kitchen witch will tell you to use flowers, leaves and herbs from your garden to make a unique herbal concoction!


It’s not always possible to immerse yourself in waters in the natural world (think streams, lakes and rivers), which is why many modern witches curate a similar environment with a home bath. Herbalist and tarot reader Staci Ivori brings a personal touch to her salt bath by incorporating food and herbs into the bathwater. If you don’t have a bathtub, you can still do the same in the shower.


Other witches like Pam Grossman believe that makeup is just as effective in boosting her mood as a bath soak and skin care. A bold red lippie is a powerful statement for any look, and it’ll make you feel more confident and fierce too!
